Montenegro Holidays - Destination Profile

Montenegro is a Balkan country with a west side stretched along the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Elsewhere, she shares borders with Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo and Albania. She benefits from a Mediterranean climate, having hot, dry summers extending into the autumn months, and comparatively cold winters. Though a relatively small country, Montenegro holidays will satisfy a diversity of interests and have much to offer the curious traveller, from medieval buildings, exotic trees and plants, to friendly locals and traditional towns where quaint cafes can be found. Though not so well known as her neighbour Croatia, where tourism is burgeoning, trips here are nonetheless equally impressive, and still unusual enough to impress your friends with your sense of adventure.

The resort of Becici has a stunning beach with a huge stretch of coarse golden sand backed by imposing mountains. Once an old fishing village, the resort has flourished into a holiday hub with a number of lively cafes to choose from. The charming old town of Budva is a short stroll away where a lively night scene complements Becici's chilled-out, relaxing evening atmosphere.

The seafood is amazing, along with delicious cheeses and fantastic local wines. You could sample 'Rakija', a very strong plum spirit - one sip at a time! Traditional coastal cuisine includes smoked carp and Kastradina (dried mutton). For those with a sweet tooth, try donuts dipped in honey.

For nightlife during your Montenegro holidays head to Budva where there are a variety of bars and clubs. The bars are generally open until 1am and then people move onto the clubs, arguably the best club in Budva is the newly built "Tracadero".

Getting Around on Montenegro Holidays

Train: Travelling by train during your Montenegro holidays is the cheapest was to travel from north to south. However the quality of service is not as high as more developed countries.

Bus: Possibly the easiest way of getting around during your Montenegro holidays. The buses are frequent during the summer months and relatively reliable. Ticket prices are very reasonable but please bear in mind local buses do not have air conditioning and smoking is quite common.

Car: Hiring a car whilst taking Montenegro holidays is an interesting experience because there are no real motorways and all roads are 2 lanes and not up to British standards. Most roads are quite curvy and bend round the mountains and the speed limit is 70km/h and 80km/h on the open roads. It is necessary to have your headlights on whilst driving, even during the day!!!

Locally made lace and wooden items provide a wonderful memento of your stay. The charming shops are full of interesting artefact's for you to discover.

Holidays in Montenegro - Beaches
